Small Ports Container Handling
Introduction
Although Mobicon Straddle Carriers are normally not found in ports, there is a specialised use for the Mobicon in small ports, such as older, less frequently used ports.
The Problem
Small ports, such as in the Pacific Islands and some African and South American ports, do not have the infrastructure to handle containers.
Typically at these ports, a small ship arrives once a week with a small number of containers on board.
The wharf does not have a crane, and the ship's crane unloads and loads the containers.
As there are not many trailers on the wharf, delays in unloading the ship are common. The wharves are often old, and made of timber. These wharves cannot support a heavy forklift or reach stacker.
The Solution
After the ship's crane places the container on the wharf, the Mobicon Straddle Carrier picks the containers up from the wharf and places them in a holding yard, just off the quay.
When the ship has left, the Mobicon places the containers one by one on the trucks that do their deliveries.
The Benefits
- Ship turn-around times are improved, saving large demurrage costs.
- Containers can be placed on road trucks when the ship is gone, separating the ship operations from the road transport.
- The Mobicon does not damage a wharf like a container forklift or a reach stacker, saving costly repair bills.
